Esprit de Corps
04:11
|
|||
The challenge now facing the Scourge of the West
Is keeping up esprit de corps
Courage is plentiful; the men are the best
At staying out of pointless war
The NCOs have a crazy scheme to get rich quick
It’s a harmless thing
The rank and file are outcasts living the dream
All they require is a leader who’ll let it happen
Up from the ranks, humble as pie, lucky as Columbia Lou
Sharp as a tack when trouble’s afoot
Otherwise he hasn’t got a clue
Clumsy like a fool, loyal to a fault, utterly devoid of greed
Wholesome with a heart, fearless and kind
The commander good men need
The locals are mostly friends to respect
The few who oppose are held in check
Everyone has a reason to maintain the dream
An island of peace held together by a cherished captain
The real threat comes from the brass above
Who knows what they’re capable of?
Brilliant or not, be it fact or disguise
Apparent incompetence can save lives
Then there’s the wrangler, best shot in town
She’s got her eye on a wedding gown
Wilton plays dumb, but he’ll do what’s in store
As soon as it’s good for esprit de corps
Why can’t real life soothe the mind like a simple story frozen in time? Maybe the dreamer doesn’t matter as much as the dream
You’re free to escape as you please
From the life you’re trapped in
Tell your story, sing your song; spin your own flavor of tale
Ultimately it’s utterly up to you whether it’s to any avail
The web you weave can be an island of peace
Or a devastating, pointless war
You’re in command so dodge the brass
And keep up esprit de corps
Some people need to have a crazy scheme
Let the best hang around and do their thing
Most people need a little help to live their dream
All they require is a leader who’ll let it happen

Time Can't Tell Me
04:11
|
|||
A mismatched pair of joined hands
Chase each other around the wall
Adjustments made as needed
Forward they spring and back they’ll fall
The mourning dove sings at seven
The fabled blue warbler starts at three
It was there and then I learned how to tell time
But time can’t tell me
How clever that seemed to be
The face by the door stared patient and firm
As a voice said “come on in”
Sometimes someone would walk outside
And never come back again
Big, bad changes were happening there
And they ruined us by degrees
Not much of a game, but it has its points and time can’t tell me
Time can’t tell me how to play until it wins
She never did laugh when the joke was good
Or flinch at the flash of a gun
I never got used to her ticking away
Even after her work was done
Like a feeble excuse for the sun
And still she marks the hours in a dark room
Long may she run
And still I fail to fully fathom the fact
That we’ve no longer just begun
And I can’t be the only one
I packed things into boxes
Which once were captivating and new
Only the wind says “come on in”
For the old voice is packed up, too
You don’t have to see if you want to believe
Either way, away you go
What will happen then? Well, time will tell
But time can’t tell me, time can’t tell me
No time can’t tell me – how that feels I don’t yet know

Seinfeld

|

Seinfeld, Seinfeld! It was a part of my childhood
I loved that show
All the comedy and action, it was my favorite
It was my favorite show; it deserves a go, yeah
Seinfeld, Seinfeld! It brings back memories
Eating ice cream, messing up the sheets up on the bed pre
Messing the sheets up all the time, yeah
Seinfeld was part of my childhood; it’s on my face ... wooh!
Seinfeld, Seinfeld! Seinfeld was a part of my childhood
I remember watching it for the first time
Now I’m watching it for the billionth time, a billionth and oneth
Oh, now a trillionth and a millisecond – give it a go, Seinfeld!

Kitties in the Night
02:24
|
|||
Kitties turning on the lights, kitties making it bright
One and two o’clock, meowing in my ear
Kitties chasing each other, all day playing
And sometimes I just forget your love
Oh, kitties, kitties in the night; wo wo!
Kitties trick you into thinking they’re oh so cuddly
And they are just so loving
But one and again at five – jeez, you sound like a bee hive
Oh, kitties, you’re so cuddly
Oh, kitties, kitties in the night; wo wo!

Fort Peace
04:50
|
|||
Built my castle in the shade
As the warm wind blew, the tall pines swayed
When the sun dipped down
Pap and I watched the Braves beat Toronto
Rode my bike within the walls
Answered welcome land-line calls
Didn’t care about how or why
Today’s dream crawls toward tomorrow
Though the gates were trees and the ramparts clear
It was home, Fort Peace, and it kept out fear
And I smiled and thought “I’m going to stay right here forever”
Then came cause for a long patrol
Nights spent camping in the cold
As the days strolled past
My former post grew old and abandoned
Fought a semi-private war
Sinking so far from the shore
When I returned at last
Only one locked door was still standing
And a madman took the helm of a vessel that transported me
To a foolish, cruel realm with no memory
And I cried and thought “this is how it’s going to be forever”
Now I’m generally in command
My fate is partly in my hand
I store little pieces of
Every campaign I’ve planned on this computer
Spend some precious time remembering
Don’t waste any more repenting
Grow a higher love
Chase the present sprinting toward the future
We had to move Fort Peace, but I kept the name
Though a heart may cease, the beat’s the same
And I think I’m going to stay here and catch a game

Temporary Magic
02:39
|
|||
Life’s kind of a drag and then you’re toast
Taking the long view, everyone’s a ghost
All you can do is try
To pretend you’re immortal until you die
And it’s hard to cry while you do what you love the most
A little bit of temporary magic
We put together pieces of a song
A little bit of temporary magic all day long can’t be wrong
Life’s kind of a drug and then you’re clean
Spend it as a cog in the cash machine
Or maybe tune that out
And get in touch with what your story’s about
The endpoints are fixed while you choose what’s in between
A fair amount of temporary magic
A couplet that is pleasing to the ear
Something that can keep you in the moment, year by year
More words here
If you go down to the Dairy Queen
Get that taste of delicious temporary ice cream
At home, at work, at the war, things are going to be fine
’Cause they’ll end
Then what will you do with the rest of your time?
I recommend temporary magic
Being where you feel you best belong
A little bit of temporary magic can’t be wrong – sing your song

Who Needs Love
04:42
|
|||
A wild one out of nowhere swaggers into my back yard
No collar, no manners, no doubt his life’s been hard
Hungry, lean, and canny, always on his guard
In a field without a goal
Here at home is comfort, come a snowstorm, flood, or drought
When it rains, my trouble is will the Internet cut out?
And who’s got time or energy to stop and care about
Some trembling lonely soul
Who needs love, who needs love?
On a planet like the one we’ve tamed, who needs love?
My fellow human beings, being human, disagree
About everything worth thinking over, sometimes violently
Most step right over a beggar, saying “Thank God that isn’t me”
And if you call them out you’re rude
Cloying for attention; how pathetic, weak, and trite
Snowflakes drive them crazy; so does reason, so does quiet
If such a man stood on my porch
He’d say, believing he was right
“It’s a cat – it’s after your food”
Who needs love, who needs love?
With the progress old white men have made, who needs love?
Who needs love, who needs love?
That’s a quaint word from a simpler day, so who needs love?
I took a chance and, after feeding that dangerous, ornery tom
I pet him and discovered how he really missed his mom
What harm can come from offering a moment’s priceless calm
To a trembling, lonely soul
Who needs love, who needs love
You may not like it or you may – you need love
Who needs love, who needs love
Every creature alive today, yes everyone needs love
Who needs love, who needs love
Who needs love, who needs love

If I Live On
02:25
|
|||
If I live to be a million, billion, trillion, quintillion
I will spend my years wisely ... and I will give praise
If I live to be a million, billion, trillion, quintillion
I will spend my years wisely ... and I will reraise
If I live on, I will have to make no major mistakes
And that’s a part of life, quite a challenge to overcome

Beyond the Walls
05:17
|
|||
Say it once more for the kid in the back
They hate your guts out there
Some will try to kill you for sport
All the rest are too busy on their phones to care
It’s part of my job so I’m cutting you slack
Don’t hang yourself too soon
All lieutenants, give me daily reports
And remember, no shame in coming home this afternoon
Since you moved here, you’ve been handed a chance
To chase your chosen dreams
Inside, reason calls the shots, while extramuros
Fear is twice as powerful as it seems
This ain’t a vacation, it’s a deadly dance
One hell of a nature hike
Resist the temptation to be heroes
It’s a good rule;
You’ve got to see for yourselves what the world is like
Beyond the walls, the only games
Are lies and brawls
A smart man steals whatever he can
Then throws the law on whoever he blames
Out beyond the walls
Make no mistake: it’s not that they can’t tell
What’s right from wrong
It doesn’t matter ’cause the system wins
And you deserve to lose by being where you don’t belong
Those by nature suited to a quiet cell
Are better off inside
In your pappy’s day we raised a defense
Most intellectuals took up arms and the pacifists died
One way out, one way in
That’s what works for now
I know that all of you wish
There wasn’t so much hullabaloo
Maybe someday soon this war will end
I don’t know, but believe it or not, I hope so too
I’ve said my piece, so class dismissed
You’d best be on your way
You are more than welcome to come back in
Young scholars
Know that no one will help you if you stay
Beyond the walls they’ve lost their minds
Sagan bless you all; try to blend in
Don’t look for trouble, kids
And don’t be what it finds out beyond the walls

Hang on to Now
03:44
|
|||
Wade too deep in the wishing well
Fall asleep on the carousel
Try to be someone time can’t tell and you’ll see
Work hard between commuter flights
Do good only when under the lights
Spend your days waiting for the nights
Oh, the humanity! What could your purpose be?
Hang on to now for that is where you belong
Why wonder who asked you to do
What you can’t do wrong while your mind is strong?
Be where you are for that is where you must temporarily stay
Hang on to now as it drags you away
Care too much about the game you’re in
Whether it’s fair or where you begin
Judge your play by how much you win and you’ll lose
Swim against the laminar flow
Or cling in despair to the status quo
If you measure your worth by how far you can go
In another’s shoes, prepare to hear bad news
That isn’t how you can cure the disease
So many try, from birth till they die
To ignore the pleas of their memories
Life is bizarre if you insist that all eyes see it your way
You’ll make it out if you only
Hang on to now for that is where you belong
Why wonder who asked you to do
What you can’t do wrong while your mind is strong?
Be where you are for that is where you must stay
Hang on to now as it drags you away

Retreat
01:46
|
|||
Times change; space stretches before your eyes
The same old place gets tougher to recognize
Hardly cause for elation, though if we must fall back
I’ve not yet begun to defend the fort’s flag
Ground, works, remains – these cannot leave the post
Dreams, defiance, and brains – these are what matter most
If you must yield your station, no other choice to choose
With somewhere to run to, you can’t ever lose
