The rising sun reveals a brand new problem And here I was convinced I'd hit the bottom Someone set their troubles free and look who caught 'em But a boxing glove ain't much without a chin And I've done got too old for the daily grind Never really cared for clocking in at nine That glittering wheel lands on misfortune every time And I done got too old for another spin Every human on this earth is crazy At least I'm the kind that owns up to it, maybe The wisest man on earth is just another baby Who bawls when he can but mostly holds it in And I done got too old for them monkey shines Won't get fooled by any charmer's tired lines This gilded world makes me want To drink myself to sleep sometimes But I done got too old to go for gin Yes I done got too old to like a losing game I can see through any illusion 'cause they're all the same A loudmouth steals your joy while dangling wealth and fame And I done got old to play again Yes I done got too old to compare myself to any other men

Yonder on that causeway, can you believe your leaves? Here come the hairless monkeys dancing against the breeze Half of the time they're bragging, breaking in brand new boots The rest of their noise is spinning a yarn About wanting to put down roots They walk in circles and so they never get very far Take the same old trail for the hundredth time And then drive off in a shiny car Such a strange thing to see them hurry from here to there They like to say they're free And they can move, but they ain't going anywhere Did you know they chopped down those majestic Fraser firs? Their bark is hard to handle but their bite is even worse I never will understand these apes; hush now, here they come They almost never listen but it's safest to play dumb They walk in circles as if nothing were amiss Their culture's not impressive Though I understand they think it is Such strange things -- they can sit still but it's quite rare They boast about their progress And they get around but they ain't getting anywhere I've stood here and seen them growing old walking in circles They nailed a sign to me that says "Stay on the trail" It's a circle

John and Paul were giants, but it took a Brian To hook 'em up with Parlophone The world could never have 'em -- they'd still be in the Cavern If they'd gotten by on genius alone Maybe that's the law of the land: The manager succeeds, not the band This is the way we've always done that And it works out some of the time Once we had a new hope; now Mattel and Hasbro Are pulling all the Jedi strings From struggles in Tunisia to lizards at your leisure Such imbalance CGI can bring! Look at what success can destroy It's Daley and Zahn for this boy That is the way they've always done this And they sell out some of the time The very best might work the spotlight, not once offered a role Waste life obeying, toiling away in some unlucky hole People want a familiar face; good's no good if it shows up late Luck, money, human nature: forms of quality control Build a better mousetrap, a civil code that's not crap And a further obstacle remains Imagine old McConnell working at McDonald's With our best minds holding the reins I get wealth is part of the biz But what once was need not be what is One simple way we've always done that Doesn't mean we have to keep on It's all in luck and it would suck for Ford if he wasn't in movies You have to know someone to get in on the fun For now that's the realities Everyone wants to have that fame Part of it's up to the dice in the game Outdated useless virtues: forms of quality control Everyone wants an easier way but for now we don't have a say You have to make money to pay, you think about it everyday Sure, it would be easier but for now we have quality control Needless destruction caused by corruption Guarding a worthy goal Needless rebuilding and it's the children who will pay the toll Play one game until you die Smart's not smart if it won't ask why Skills to select in cavemen: now that's quality control You may think I'm whining, but it isn't my name That's being done dirty and wrong After all, we needed to be thus impeded Or we never would have written this song Maybe that's the way of the world but so was enslaving girls Sure, that's the way we've always done this And it's not good -- time for a change

Whoa, Ginger 04:05
Oh, Ginger, you make my day, oh Ginger You take what's wrong and right my way You were looking for a home to stay Oh, oh Ginger (Whoa, Ginger) You're my favorite out of the cats You catch all types of bugs and rats, oh Ginger You were looking for a home You wanted to explore a new biome For you I would never abandon Your claws are sharp just like a cannon (Whoa, Ginger) Oh Ginger, you make my day You lighten up what was gray, oh Ginger, you seem to linger You bite my finger, you are my sweet Ginger You scratch me and I scratch your fur too (Whoa, Ginger) It's a Ginger, you smell like cinnamon You are my little kitten, my little mitten, you are my baby cat I would never hit you with a baseball bat (Whoa, Ginger)

Well I woke up and logged in to Ego Trip Advisor on a rainy day Sat back in my swivel chair And imagined other living things away If you want to get in touch with me My number's zero; so's my home address I haven't a care; I traded 'em in For a private car on the Me Myself Express No, I don't need a conductor, engineer, or fireman Look somewhere else if you are looking for a job Chug chug, I'm blowing black smoke out into the environment My route is one big oval -- there ain't no station where I stop Now you might have had a toy like this When you were 'long about 9 or 10 This is the same thing, only bigger And it's never going to touch the box that it came in I'll be glad to share with inquiring minds the secret of my excess As soon as I have cause to disembark From the fabled Me Myself Express It's not that I've been taking too much care of others Truth be told, I've given far less than I took And I'm not ashamed to admit it: if I had my druthers The only friends I'd call are the ones I read about in a book I'm only joking; it's a haven for when I withdraw into my mind But most of the folks you meet Really do stay on their own train all the time And if need be, I can watch the human tragedy coalesce From the comfort of the dining car Of the runaway train called the Me Myself Express I've spent a good many years Having a pity party on the Me Myself Express And any time I want, I can holler out "All aboard" for the Me Myself Express

They put up a hospice clinic where the Radio Shack once stood In the midst of a thriving city's most neglected neighborhood It's Econ 101, you know, good old supply and demand In walks obvious rabble, the staff immediately knows Still they ask him routine questions As they judge him by his clothes One fills out the standard intake form While crushing candy with the other hand No one ever turned a profit helping out the poor So they mark time until he gets it And disappears back out the door He can't afford it A bit part's lamp is meant to stay between dark and dim And it may be sordid but Utopia has no room for folks like him If you've got a ticket, boy there's nothing this ride lacks And if you don't, you'd best not stand too near the tracks Never mind a new lease on life; this man can't afford to die His personal code of conduct rules out swiping a shopping cart He hasn't had a hot meal since he pawned his Purple Heart Some problems have solutions but are easier to forget What will he do once rejected? Well, it may not come to that Such a future might be where we're headed It's awful close to where we're at So this isn't a true story, or at least it isn't yet It's our own fault, not a hard rule: all the same, life isn't fair It's not that nobody gives a damn We don't realize that he's there Because we've ignored it From a box seat you don't ever have to play And the game's distorted He was born on an 0-2 count with a screwball on the way If you're traveling first class Dealing with what the high life entails Then you don't have time to think about Who's camped between the rails Never mind a new lease on life He can't afford it; let him fade away like others of his kind While we're rewarded for winning a race In which we never were behind Looking down on losers is America's true romance But you're not a loser if you never had a chance Never mind, it's not your problem That someone can't afford to die

I got all my friends, chocolate and creme Being made of dough really is the dream Strawberry sprinkles, so many kinds All the big ones have great minds Everyone wants to adventure out Except the lazy ones, they only want to pout Whatever happens out there, I'm in No matter what happens, it's a win I can't wait till I get out there Then us doughnuts can all share We all stare when the chef picks up A random doughnut from the cup Sometimes he'll put us all in a box He goes to the back to the kitchen and talks They seem to trade that green paper stuff He always mutters "it isn't enough" We're always confused but go on with our day Hanging in the glass walls of some display We'll always prevail behind the scenes We'll always be patient and be keen to learn I can't even imagine the honor you could earn If you were out there But the chef doesn't even care Oh, the addiction so beware Food doesn't want to explore If that sounds lame, your whole life is a bore The Beatles went out and played their gigs So why can't we do what calls from within? Be a true doughnut; it shows your skill Oh my God -- she's picking me up! She took me home and took me out Looked at me and I grinned my mouth This is finally happening; I can't wait for what's next She picked me up and opened her mouth I instantly thought "what is this all about?" I panicked and screamed as loud as I could She immediately dropped me; I cried in relief She called 911 -- I knew I had to flee I'd run for minutes; I thought about smiles I'd seen on their faces when they got their treat I had to go back; I went back in After all, that's what I'm destined to do; I knew I had to Now I can imagine the adventures you can have When you're out of the box Being devoured isn't good But it doesn't hurt like I thought it would Every being has a fate to meet Mine is to be a delicious treat I'm lost in time but not in space Now I'm part of a human face I'm scattered about, not quite myself But at least I didn't go stale on a shelf I'll miss my friends at the bakery But out of the box is where a doughnut should be

In a Song 00:57
In a song, seeking someone to hear the call Nearly didn't exist at all; suddenly it came to me In a song, trapped for life with no way out Nothing to do but write about a tiny sliver of time, no doubt Yet room enough for any thought you please In a song, in a song -- A lovely withering long-stemmed rose One of a trillion True Man Shows; how and why nobody knows But that is where we seem to be: in a song, in a song, in a song

All Downhill 03:22
Haven't you noticed at the peak of a summer's day It's got to get cold? Doesn't the snow kiss the tree as it melts away? Do you behold That change is here for the duration? That is a postulate, not an equation As I climb my chosen rock I secretly hope I never reach the top 'Cause then it's all downhill, a long slow demotion Like a soaring eagle falling into the ocean I can feel it coming and yet I stubbornly learn and build Knowing full well once you reach your peak, life is all downhill Ever since the '80s I've eagerly wanted to explore This lofty range Zion and Hades, freedom and prison and more Beauty and pain Happily reaching higher and higher, finally seeing all of it's maya Might as well find the best possible view As if I had something better to do Then it's all downhill -- I'm feeling slightly defeated Yes, nirvana will be there when I need it Still I strive toward the summit I'd rather not reach it but soon I will Knowing full well once you hit your peak, life is all downhill Now it's all downhill but it isn't the end 'cause The trip down might be more fun than the ascent was Though my castle is crumbling I'm shoveling sand up to when I lie still Knowing full well half of any good climb must be all downhill
12.
I tried and tried to warn you way back there On top of the mountain but you did not care You admired the view and told me not to complain We had the perfect chance to stop this train Yes your overconfidence blinded you ever since A lucky coincidence murdered your common sense Now all the evidence points to a consequence You refuse to believe To watch barbarians win cannot be easy from Rome or D.C. This game's been flawed since 1824 It led to gag rules, Dred Scott, and civil war "Would you rather live in Russia?" stuck in every old man's head Most of 'em lived through Nixon -- how much worse can it get? And now look what we got; it was worse than I thought The fuzz turned into Nazis 'cause crosses are swastikas How can we unadjust? What is it costing us? You cannot conceive The motorman noticed the grade but his boss was ruthless Now the brakes are useless Some folks could ignore a Yeti Thanks to Steve Jobs it ain't even hard Me and my sort were born ready Your kind will go to the grave off guard The captain of the Californian Couldn't hold a rocket to your tunneling eyes Don't say I didn't warn you On second thought, run your mouth if you like The view from the top obscures the best forecasts Enjoy it while it lasts Still you won't listen and still you don't know I'm no fool; I do not speak for your ears alone Perhaps a private smile betrays your equipoise But you can't conceal the signal just by making noise You're too indiscriminate; a stretched-too-thin bigot Went to war on women in the name of the innocent Your time is imminent -- wondering where it went? Since you will not leave All the enemies you've made will now evict you Don't let the door hit you It's not your death we're after Most human beings are not so cruel Besides, for you to hear the laughter Would be a little more fitting and much more cool I know you want to be remembered Whether as an object of hate or love I'll try to break it to you tender Either way you ain't going to measure up You get a quick burst of shame before you're buried in the past Enjoy it while it lasts Enough about you; now Like it or not, everyone aboard will have to ride this wreck out I'm going to tell y'all something Once or twice I've really come close to jumping But knowing the future doesn't even scratch the will to stay alive If I'd been born too late I'd have no choice Born any sooner and you've never have heard my voice Accepting fate's the best part of free will So here I am between the view and the kill Watching and waiting for the sequel to '84 Gathering data for nothing or maybe more Hiding my crazy? Sure! Just a creative, poor witness to New Age Eve Trying my best to describe how humanity blew it And then to live through it I didn't know what to expect Coming to the world from the nether abyss I sure wasn't asking for perfect But maybe we could have done better than this No point in starting an argument With no superpower or army in sight All I can do is document our precious time at this lofty height Marvel at the potential we've amassed And enjoy it while it lasts
