Here comes John with his personal halo He already knows everything about God He memorized the first scary story he came to But personal space, well he must have forgot “Hey there guys – have you heard the lies Half of this part of the world believes? I know you’ll say you wish I’d go away But the man in the sky told me what He needs” He’s on the fast track to heaven Tell you all about it, never going to show you The world that we live in isn’t worth diddly to him Now I don’t know how many Johns really mean it But some use faith as a means to an end No need to look around; you’ve already seen it And in 2024 you’re going to see it again “I cater to fools, I take advantage of rules My opponent will ban Christianity I’ll keep the unborn safe and women in their place Almighty Jesus is toast unless you vote for me” They’re on the fast track to heaven Carving up the pie – never going to share it The world that we live in is only money to them Here comes trouble for sane poor people The more you concede, the stronger greed grows Pretty soon John will elect a dictator and then who knows? “You already gave all your power away Now the man in the sky says to do as you’re told You had your chance to escape from the trance But now your rent’s growing up and your kids are controlled There’ll be no changing the rules because we’ve taken the tools The way it is now, it will forever be so go right ahead and try” Hurry up and see there ain’t no fast track to heaven It’s going to take time and no one else can show you The world that we live in is soaked in gasoline And all it takes is one damn fool

Simplization 05:26
Hunting and gathering, then stories about stars ’round the fire Their short, hard, sublime lives bound only by their desire Just enough time to take to task How sweet the sunshine when one could bask Everything sapiens dared to ask before simplization First came the farmland, followed by fences and gates One day the women were property of their mates Unnatural cities with walls to match, violent conflicts over cash Poor devils making a headlong dash toward simplization Building more boardrooms high above the ground Tearing the last of the tall trees down If you scream to be heard above the sound Then they will take you away A king-size bed and a golf course lawn Medicine to heal anything that goes wrong A safe place to hide from the throng All this and more’s yours as long as you can pay Complex notions, novels, theorems and games None of that’s real – we made it all up in our brains As an escape from the truth, which is We’re throwing away the last of our gifts You might think we’re getting smarter each day But the troubling trend goes the other way Soon there’ll be only one game to play thanks to simplization

In my time I’ve plowed a cornfield And seen a spaceship land on Mars Drove a flatbed plum to Chicago Loaded down with Mason jars Rode a mule then flown a Cessna Built a TV, split some rails Sung the Gospel, built a road up Fonde Heard it all and told new tales Next to the sky, right by a fountain A restful home with plenty to do I’m living high on the mountain And I’m glad you live here too I’ve digitized these fading photos Of a world we’ve left behind Born before they discovered Pluto Lived to see them change their mind I did my best to leave Earth better For you kids because I care When I go, and it might be tomorrow Do me these favors and we’re square Say your goodbye, drink from the fountain Have a safe drive home; you’ve still got plenty to do You grew up high on the mountain And the story isn’t through Don’t wonder why my heart quit counting Rest assured I still enjoy the view Put me high on the mountain So I can be that much closer to you

There’s always a conflict between us Our tempers are as hot as Venus Remember when we thought we had a friend until we die Remember when we found out that Santa was a lie There’s one lesson to be learned That people have different perspectives “I just want some food to eat, just some fresh meat Those big humans give me snacks but refuse to set me free” That little cat is so sweet but won’t love on me That little kitty has a brain but won’t cooperate Two different perspectives I’m always in the way and you always get yours I have enough to live in peace, but you always get more So I’ve decided to attack From now on there’ll be no going back – it’s war There will be conflicts between us But there’s never a need for meanness Remember we can be friends and disagree Remember when we watched Fred teach us on TV There’s one more lesson to be learned It’s okay to have different perspectives We’ve always done the work for you; who gets the money? We risk our lives and kids for you, you think it’s funny So we’ve decided that’s enough From now on the serfs are playing rough – who’s running? Ten billion objectives, one selfish directive Two dreams, only one of which can come true A planet-wide collective, two different perspectives And how can so many minds make do When fortune only favors a few We do so many jobs for you, you ask us to do more No time for what we want to do; what is this life for? So we’ve decided to attack From now on there’ll be no going back – it’s war

Mr. Banks, you are worth more than most in your church Dole out pay by the dime, quarters at Christmastime Born on third, bunted home When you deign to nobly roam I can’t help but notice you choose Spain, the Riviera or Bahrain And my question’s plain Do you speak English when you go? Do you expect that they will know? Are you comfortable believing in your dreams? Can you survive not getting your way? Are you protected by those you pay? Most important, how do you block out the mounting screams? Take your time while you can; pray you never meet a man Cover your head, don’t catch cold A pity bribes can’t buy off old Your hard work has brought its boon A big vacation’s coming soon And my question stands Do you speak English when you go? Do you expect that they will know? Are you comfortable believing in your dreams? I am afraid you won’t get your way Now at the mercy of come what may And the currency doesn’t transfer, so it seems Do you speak English? Is that all? Haven’t you heard of Murphy’s Law? What if truth, compassion or wisdom opens the door? Will you freak out once it’s too late? No hired hand can meet your fate And no amount of cash will help you anymore

When I'm 12 06:08
When I’m 12 I will be mature When I’m 12 I’ll know so much more I will fall off my bike, meet a girl I like And I can be myself Stay up till 5 every night Play that game where me and my friends can fight when I’m 12 When I’m 12 I will rob a bank Sign up for the army, steal a tank Learn Ice 3, take a friend to a star, play a diamond guitar Redistribute wealth Tell kids to stay off my grass Catch the world’s most medium-mouth bass when I’m 12 As my powers grow The work is getting harder and the race is on Jade begins to show I see ahead much farther; how the world’s a lie The carefree part of life is passing by And when I’m 12 it’s gone When I’m older, I will have more chores When I’m 12, I will want much more I will cry and lie about my usage of time I dread the thought of dying Getting older is a gift and a pain Sometimes the right thing is to rest and remain sane by sighing There’s more to laugh about The good stuff pokes through garbage every now and then I’ve figured some things out Where the safe spots are, which kind of man to be And one fact is especially plain to see: I won’t be 12 again I know these days seem to drag And next year’s a trillion miles away But I kind of wish they’d stay, yes it’s true So I can wait forever even though I won’t have to Many years from now I might be able to close my faded eyes and pretend The shine of youth returned with the warm May wind I’ll save that thought for when I’m 12 again On that day, how my life will change Better, worse, more normal, and more strange I will climb back on my bike, text the girl that I like Put more books on the shelf Stay up till 5 every night Play that game where me and my friends can fight when I’m 12

So Long 03:22
To meet the minimum weight The cork vests were loaded with iron bars As the General steamed on Burning mothers heaved babes Into the river’s welcoming arms The fiends got away with it somehow It’s not life that’s sacred but good PR So long since the game took a lifetime to learn Now it’s changed yet not grown I won’t sing to sell beer Or get handmaids to dance with bros If a bard’s fate must rest in the hands of a merchant Then a ranger I’ll be The system is subtle and stable It wastes dreams that lead to a much, much better dawn So long to a world understood by a child Left unmade by old men I can’t learn enough to find out what nobody knows As the wrinkles dig in The sun sets each night on more plastic More distraction, less hope No evil need bring down our heroes The quest against darkness is ever more brightly ignored So long as closed minds are content to be ruled That’s as long as they will

This is a story about love I want to teach my children and grandchildren Something about love That is the legacy I want to leave them How to love, that it exists Not like the love they’ve seen Not a sad love filled with heartache and tears Love that doesn’t make you cry, love doesn’t have to hurt No more generational trauma I want to wrap it up and give it to them; I want it to be shiny I want to tie it up with a big red bow, but life isn’t like that Life is messy and tangled up – it’s a bowl of spaghetti But maybe we can leave them with this Even with all that messiness We made it work, we wrapped spaghetti And maybe it wasn’t pretty or shiny but it held together

There used to be a man, lived back in the trees Grew and distilled every kind of cure He coaxed Mother Nature into meeting our needs That ain’t the way it is anymore The police got after him, shot him down Half-buried that feller in the mud Next day a semi rolls into town With 76 cases of dragon’s blood Oh my my – it seems our supply is running low And while the price runs high It’s perfectly legal and can’t be grown The generic is maflaffalan We beat down the pox and yellow fever with ease So there ain’t no money in health anymore Which created a market for a modern disease And wouldn’t you know it: there’s only one cure The new racket runs as smooth as a clock And nipped the revolution in the bud Each day a steamer ties up at the dock Unloads 76 cases of dragon’s blood Oh my my I can’t afford the insurance they make you have now With the price so high I want to go back to Nature but don’t know how Choose ye the pharmacy or the grave? Generic is maflaffalan Unlucky soul You got sick on the job and had to go into debt That’s the poor man’s role Bills up to your ears, then dirt over your head Oh my my – it seems our supply is running low And while the price runs high It’s perfectly legal and can’t be grown I wish I owned the patent on dragon’s blood

I was walking down the street, happened to meet my dream The ocean sea -- yes it was rough, yes it was tough My mind was on other stuff I wrecked my boat, I’d had enough But I kept going: I didn’t quit for I am one with the sea I was looking for a life, found myself a wife But that was in the past I’m here at last I’m learning fast; something’s wrong, I realize at last I’m being careless and cruel, acting like a fool! I need to have the sailor spirit because I’m one with the sea I will sail the seven seas and do so with ease The scent of the air makes you want to sneeze Riding my ship with peace and quiet In the night where the lanterns aren’t lit With glory comes sacrifice but here it is so nice I am one with the sea As an old man I was trying to block the fear of dying Enjoy my last years, think on my careers, bring on my tears All I can think of are my fears I need to visit an old friend: it’s been a long time, ocean For I am one with the sea I recall where I used to play with my boat Down by the muddy moat I’ve had many adventures with deep blue It’s counting on me and I’m counting on you I am one with the sea I will plan for the future, simple and pure If you ever need help I’ve got the cure In a boat, in a yacht, the ocean is your tour If you run out of space, the sea provides more Confusion and pollution ruin the sea but I will always know I am one with the sea, I am one with the sea

Now I’m all for adventure, distant destinations and long drives Grew up in the bucket seat of a Mustang On that first drive across South Carolina I didn’t know this would be my life Chasing horizonless pipe dreams and doing it the hard way Either sleeping or writing Performing or planning or barreling down the road Trying to break those circumstantial chains Memories, energy, youth and hope None of them could keep up They left me alone and nothing but the road remains I was born in a junk-filled holler Escaped ’cause I could cope with school Wasted weekends studying up for Monday Listened to broken-hearted rebels Tricked into thinking the lies were true Believed that somehow hard work would pay off someday Yeah, the Emerald City would open its doors To those who follow the road The tickets to luxury were our hands and brains Well, that dream is dead and we all know It’s money alone that counts The whole place cloaked itself and nothing but the road remains As my chin grew white and my eyes grew dim I figured something out One night racing the sunset west on 60 I’d gone from here to there, learning what life is And I knew beyond all doubt Those years of experience were all I could take with me Yeah, I’ve hurled my body against a wall Another stink bug on the grill And for all that, nothing meaningful has changed With nothing else to do but cruise this road, I suppose I will Until nothing but the road remains
