Still Trying to Kick It
01:52
|
|||
I found one in my winter coat pocket, one in my dresser drawer
Found one in the bathroom mirror
I don’t recall doing that before
I found some in the glove compartment, a few in my change can
I found two in Mama’s jewelry box, one in my hat band
These old habits keep turning up
Once you’ve hit the wall you know you’ve had enough
Now I might slip a time or two but most times I throw ’em away
’Cause I’m still trying to kick it and getting better every day
Down there on the corner used to be my go-to guy
I had to change my number and learn to pass him by
Sometimes I see my angel but her demons wouldn’t let go
And the hardest thing I had to do was learn to tell her no
These old habits keep turning up
Once you’ve hit the wall you know you’ve had enough
Now I might slip a time or two but most times I throw ’em away
’Cause I’m still trying to kick it and getting better every day

Very Slowly
04:14
|
|||
Can someone help? My face is falling off very slowly
I’m stuck with last year’s tech
And now the room’s getting dark – holy moly
Traded my tacky sash for a uniform that would match
Oh God I’m dying, very slowly
Standing still and losing my mind, not quite so slowly
Like many things, what makes it scary is that I can’t control it
Some guys have all the luck, but I really don’t give
Much thought to things that don’t happen very slowly
Got a name and number from The Man
Paid peanuts, hoping to cashew if I can
Spend most days in the prison yard
Pursuing happiness under guard
Playing ’em tight till that magic card hits my hand
Some of these guys have never learned to read
And all of the rest prefer to watch TV
Heads explode in a beautiful way
In a life directed by Michael Bay
Getting nowhere fast on a negative one way street
The ambulance and hearse are headed here, very slowly
Sliding over the ice like a vetoed sloth toward a goalie
Gathering coal for the chicken coop, if I ever get out of the loop
You can bet it won’t be very slowly

X K P
03:13
|
|||
Well they’re on my trail and they’re hunting me down
They’ll never stop looking till the day that I’m found
Been running so long but I think I’m losing ground
Well they’re after me ’cause they think I’m the one
I’m wanted for something that I’ve never done
Been hiding so long but I think it’s only begun
I’m an X K P but can I ever escape?
I’m an X K P but can I ever escape?
The dogs are barking; they’ve picked up my scent
They’re tracking me everywhere that I went
And it won’t be long until my time is spent
I’m an X K P but can I ever escape?
I’m an X K P but can I ever escape?

Good People
02:41
|
|||
I used to think they were good people
Maybe just set in their ways
They told me it was all about heritage
Had nothing to do with the hate
Now I watch as good people look for a reason and rhyme
To justify another man dying – I’ve lost count of the times
They say he should have just listened, he should’ve complied
If he wasn’t up to no good he would not have died
What about his rap sheet? What about his past?
"What if he were your brother?" is all I will ask
I could’ve swore they were good people
Now they make jokes for the dead
And expect me to believe all lives matter
While they thump books they’ve never read
I do believe there are good people
Their stand against hate gives me hope
But if there’s one thing I learned
What I thought were good people
Are really just wolves in sheep’s clothes
They say just entertain us, we don’t care what you think
Just throw the football, shut up and sing
What will be remembered when it comes to the end
Won’t be the words of the enemy but the silence of friends

When It Feels Good
05:36
|
|||
Ice was there from the moment you stepped outside
Penetrating gusts of wind stealing away the power within
All you wanted was a comfortable place to hide
From the winter storms; there were no other bones about it
While someone in need brought you out of that door
You don’t want to leave any more
Except when it feels good
Then let the wind blow through your hair
And you wish it was always there
With the warmth of the sun, the two of them work as one
But they’ve got to be mixed right
Or the magic falls apart before your eyes
Ain’t nothing beats being outside when it feels good
I was there at the moment you turned him down
You wouldn’t spend your life
A comfortable, cared-for, good-enough wife
Your words were what he expected, judging by the sound
He’d be dead pretty soon
And not a soul in the room could doubt it
The nurse showed us the door, he seemed content to have tried
You never liked saying goodbye
Except when it feels good
Then let the stream take you to the sea
You would have done the same to me
I think it might have been fun, the two of us living as one
But I get how you are now
Some birds can only take off and land on their own ground
You don’t really want anybody around except when it feels good
The story’s been here since before you knew what it could mean
Before you had a place to stay you still felt like running away
And you are a prisoner as long as you have not seen
The invisible key – you’ll never be free without it
This idea I’ll try to tell you right now
A last precious line before taking my bow
Examine your thoughts; ask what you’re looking for
Else you’ll always be reaching for more
Except when it feels good – then you’re happy, without a care
And that feeling can’t always be there
It’s a will o’ the wisp; a puny reward for the ultimate risk
Till you hear me, you’re blind to all the harm
Trying to be happy can bring
You don’t really want a particular thing
You want when it feels good

Rainbow's End
02:52
|
|||
Standing at the depot waiting for the train to come
I bought me a ticket to the land of the midnight sun
I’m headed on down the track, don’t know when I’ll be back
I’m going ’round the world till I find the rainbow’s end
Standing on the dockside waiting for the ship to come
I bought me a ticket to the land of the rising sun
Well I’m going to sail away and I might be back someday
I’m going ’round the world till I find the rainbow’s end
I’m going to keep looking till I find that pot of gold
It’s waiting there at the end of the rainbow
No time for a leprechaun – I gotta keeping on until I find it
Standing at the airport waiting for the plane to come
I bought me a ticket to the land of the emerald sun
I’m flying across the sea and Ireland’s where I’ll be
I’m going ’round the world till I find the rainbow’s end

Even If Not for Me
02:46
|
|||
Please write, even if not for me
Your insight can certainly help another see
You’ve got the gift, so spin your yarn
Share your thoughts with a dash of charm
Dear Violet, jot them down eventually, even if not for me
Please try to find the love you need
Years pass by revealing what was not meant to be
To keep your life hidden is your choice
You’re a songbird with or without your voice
Still, bad decisions make for good things to read
Take the one that was made by me
Oh, the wagon ride in Jamaica was long ago
Though I didn’t ask so you could not say no
Now how the other story ends we’ll never know
I hope the one you’re living ends happily, even if not for me
Please write, set your feelings free
Put fear aside; they can always publish it posthumously
Whether or not some heaven awaits
If you pour your heart out on a page
The most wonderful part of you lasts eternally, even if not for me
Oh, I’ll pass away with all these thoughts unsaid
Lo, only a chapter or two even mentions Ned
Though perhaps someday, because of what he’s read
Another writer may say them finally, even if not for me
Oh, the pathos latent in the tales we tell
So intense even after a century’s dormant spell
Flowing from the deep dark chambers where they dwell
Go incorporate them into a life lived well
No way to recover what is lost for good
No way to remember if we truly should

A Parrot Ain't a Patriot
03:18
|
|||
Marjorie is coo coo for Coco Puffs
Yet she finds a crowd just dumb enough
To believe in that bat shit conspiracy stuff
Marjorie’s coo coo for Coco Puffs
QAnon is whacko as whacked out can be
Pushing bald face lies in the name of free speech
They walk on us all and cry "don’t tread on me"
QAnon is whacko as whacked out can be
They think they’re all patriots upholding the law
Painting their faces and tasing their balls
Making a joke in the name of taking a stand
They cry oppression on their vacation days
They back the blue ’til they don’t get their way
A parrot ain’t a patriot, they all got blood on their hands
Alex is crazier than an old pet coon
Thinks sex is on Mars and never landed the moon
Gay frogs, lizard people and Satanic typhoons
Alex is crazier than an old pet coon
Sarah was nutty as Mamaw’s fruit cake
She convinced the flock that the news was all fake
Donnie was a dipshit but he carried her flame
Sarah was as nutty as Mamaw’s fruit cake
Stop with your bitching, get on with your lives
You need to quit listening to the My Pillow guy
They’re playing y’all for fools; don’t you understand?
No one is coming for your precious rights
But you can’t embrace hatred and help spread the lies
A parrot ain’t a patriot, y’all got blood on your hands
A parrot ain’t a patriot; you don’t need that blood on your hands

Been kept inside for oh so long
Having to hide this feeling’s wrong for sure
Been locked away, I’ve lost the key
The price I pay for being me for sure
And I don’t want to be here anymore
I want things the way they were before
I don’t want to be here anymore
I always cared deeply for you
I never shared, I wanted to for sure
I know I should have told you then
I never could just be a friend, for sure
And I don’t want to be here anymore
I want things the way they were before
I don’t want to be here anymore
A girl like you, I should have known: what can I do but be alone
And I held out hope that you might see
I’m just a fool; that’s all I’ll be forever

Only Die Once
04:18
|
|||
How many of you ever did cocaine?
Or did you just hear Tyler Childers sing about it?
How many of you ever sat around
And watched those turtles all the way down, I kinda doubt it
But hey you’re digging the good stuff
Just please don’t bring the White Claws to the party
Unless it helps her learn to dance
Then I’ll understand you’re just getting started
They say you only live once, well that’s a lie
The truth is you only die one time
So dance in the rain and laugh at the jokes
If you have to say it, you ain’t woke
Remember the ride is fast, my friend
You only die once and you ain’t coming back again
I was once that kid listening to Hank
Learning how to drink and I was clueless
I heard Ronnie singing about that smell
I fell into that living hell and it was ruthless
But hey I was digging the good stuff
And I’m guilty of bringing Zimas to the party
I can’t lie, it sure did help my chances
When I threw in those Jolly Ranchers
Man she was getting started
We learned to drive Three on the Tree
You got the world at the touch of a screen
You all ate the Tide Pods, we sniffed the glue
Who in the hell would’ve ever knew
That mullet would come back around
So take the chances we never had
But don’t discredit that Boomer dad – you can learn some
They all said the same about Gen X
And we learned if you want respect, you gotta earn some
They say you only live once, well that’s a lie
The truth is you only die one time
So dance in the rain and laugh at the jokes
If you have to say it, you ain’t woke
Remember the ride is fast, my friend
You only die once and you ain’t coming back again

Nothing new under the sun but it’s a beautiful day
Nothing new under the sun and then you came my way
Everything changed when you walked by
The world looks different to my eye
Nothing new under the sun but it’s a beautiful day
Nothing new under the sun and then you looked my way
And with the sunshine pouring down
Now that you’re mine I may drown in love
Everything changed when you walked by
The world looks different to my eye
Nothing new under the sun but it’s a beautiful day
Nothing new under the sun and then you came my way
And with the sunshine pouring down
Now that you’re mine I may drown in love
Nothing new under the sun but it’s a beautiful day

Excellent Timing
02:39
|
|||
He was, he was a fine young man
They always say that when they can
Is it karma that trapped him out of scorn
Or the plain dumb luck of being born?
No way, no way to vault the stairs
Can’t hawk 45s or tour state fairs
The wonder’s gone, and man it hurts
Not to rise out of the glitter and dirt
Got to appease his jones without much patience
Dumped on a rock with technical civilizations
Such excellent timing
Believe, believe it’ll all work out
If you’re crazy enough it is called devout
Instead of joining the human race
He sequesters himself in a quiet place
Begin, begin to learn his trade
Be proud, then ashamed of the things he made
Nobody else doth seem to care
Perhaps because they’re unaware
He can do it all himself and that’s good since he has to
Sawing away at the only rope he is attached to
With excellent timing
Born late enough to figure out the name of the prison
The last move he’ll make isn’t any more important than this one
Weaving a theme increasingly contrapuntal
To finally break free as the walls begin to crumble
Such excellent timing
